Shrimp Soup & Shrimp Suicide: A meal & a poem married at last
Tonight I had a delectable dinner creation straight from the secret recipe vaults of Debbie Slayton, interpreted and stylized by her son, my roommate, Brett Slayton. It took some prodding, but I finally got Brett to agree to give up the recipe in electronic form so I could put it out there for other worthy readers of my blog to have the opportunity to attempt to concoct and partake of the tasty goodness that is: Coconut Shrimp Soup with Rice! Ok so not sure if that is it's official name or not but...well...that's what it is now.
I highly recommend this dish to anyone who loves creamy goodness, and shrimp, combined together in one orgasmic taste sensation. I know that can be interpreted in many ways but come on people...get your heads out of the gutter and stay with me here. We're talking about shrimp the likes of which Bubba would even be proud of! I'd venture to say they might even serve this dish in some lesser form at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co and charge even their most frugal patrons a whopping $16.95 plus tax and tip. And they would gladly forfiet the money they would have spent on their next two meals just to get one chance...just one chance to feast their chops on something that will satisfy those curious taste glands for days to come. All future meals for the next 48-72 hours will just leave the former Bubba Gump patrons with a sultry lust for shrimp that cannot be quenched. That is..unless...yes! They found it! They found Cavalier Times!! They found MY BLOG!!! And now said patrons will celebrate in their kitchens around the globe as they realize they are no longer slaves to Bubba Gump Shrimp Co and their tyranical monopoly over the unsatiable hunger for Coconut Shrimp Soup with Rice! No...they shall break free of the metaphorical shackles that have bound their tongues to less invigorating flavors and move toward a state of perpetual shrimpy goodness! They SHALL BE SET FREE!! They shall be free to procure the neccessary ingreidents to stretch those feelings of pure shrimpy bliss over the course of many more meals as they shall make enough to last them for days of tasty leftovers! Only then will those who once tasted this dish at a pricey movie themed restaurant by the Bay and were wooed by it's sinfully mouthwatering flavor explosions be able to return to any semblince of the person they once looked in the mirror and recognized as themselves. And ironically, until then, they will also be stuck in a rut, as if some invisible force yet to them unknown is holding them back from being great in this life. I wish I could be there...I wish I could be there when it hits you! You'll silently exclaim to yourself, "This is IT! This is the moment I've been waiting for! All these years I couldn't figure out why I was unhappy with my life, but now I realize...I haven't lived because I haven't feasted on the flavor of life! Coconut Shrimp Soup with Rice...you have made me whole again! You have shown me what it is to love once more and for that, I shall never forget you. I shall always make you. We'll be together forever. (sniffle)" That look on your face would make all this typing seem worth it for me...almost. Ahh yes...it will come you see. I know it will. It happened to me tonight. It happened to one of the readers who made it at home who shall remain nameless but was overheard it a crowded bar having said, "yeah it wasn't bad, now get that camera out of my face!" And it will happen to you too if you stay open to the powers that be. If that drunken hermaphodite's words aren't words of blessing from God herself well ladies and gentlemen...I dare to say God has been eating canned beets for too long, and those things really give you gas, trust me. So now...I...don't know...know quite how to...end this post so I'll stop there. But not before saying thank you for indulging me and following along until the bitter end. I salute you! (and by the way the shrimp is not bitter at all...it rocks!)
Please enjoy this recipe and if you don't get a chance then please enjoy reading about it over and over and try to imagine yourself having made it. That will be fun for a while too.

RECIPE:
Thai Shrimp Soup (aka Coconut Shrimp Soup with Rice)
2 T peanut oil
2 T Ginger peeled and minced
½ t crushed red pepper
5 c. chicken stock
½ c. rice – uncooked
6 mushrooms quartered
½ onion finely chopped
1 T lime peel
¾ lb shrimp
2 T lime juice
1 c. coconut milk
Sauté ginger and red pepper for one minute and add chicken stock. Bring to a boil then add rice and lime peel. Cook 20 minutes. Add mushrooms, onion, shrimp, coconut milk, and cook till shrimp is done. Add lime juice to taste.
I always add more onion, ginger, shrimp, rice…. Uh, I usually add more of just about whatever I feel like. You can too!

And now for my grand finale: a poem I wrote back in college that really ties this whole post together (or tears it even farther apart depending on your perspective):
SHRIMP SUICIDE
Mangling with artichokes will choke the artifacts
which are the facts about art which are intermingled
with the people mingling on the internet
who know the net worth of their lifespan.
The span of C-SPAN and the shelf life of canned hams
served with Thanksgiving yams giving thanks
for their bona fide confide in relied upon destiny
I vest in thee the right to serve me coffee with broccoli
and chocolate. Choc-o-lot I talk-a-lot but only because
I have something to tell you
about the time I drank wine from a goblet so fine
I almost experienced divine intervention
A miracle of sorts although some see it happen daily.
I witnessed a protection program set up to
steer the deers clear of the beer drinking drivers
who drive and then drink and then drink and then drive
and strive to hit deers with the bottles of beer that they drank
while driving down the road to their humble abode
where their fair but yet scared family awaits them.
If a tie were alive and it proceeded to die
I would laugh and paint colorful swirls.
Subtlety, Insanity, subliminal message,
drink Coca-Cola, go buy a cabbage.
Songs about laughter, words of disaster
crazy mixed up kazoos,
I am sparatic, in tact, but not static
like electricity built up in balloons.
Now follow me off a cliff!

So I'm not a Genius
So I figured what the hell, I might as well chronicle in some random fashion my thoughts so that future generations will be able to psychoanalyze my genius long after I've solved all the worlds problems. That...or...perhaps this will simply be a forum to sort out my thoughts and communicate with those who care to know what my thoughts are. Ok so I'm no genius I admit. In fact the first time I wrote the word genius in this blog those squiggly red lines appeared below the word reminding me that in fact genius is not spelled 'genious', as if reminding me I must not be one if I can't even spell it. This made me chuckle ever so softly to myself (but I cried a little on the inside). That right there should prove that my blog will not be attempting to solve world hunger or sort out that pesky auto bailout situation, but rather to just be me. Simple, fun, and with a flare for adventure. That's kind of how I see myself, and hopefully I always stay true to that self image as it has served me pretty well so far. I'm sure at times I can be a bit more complicated, but for the most part I find the simple life one that appeals to me more often than not. Who knows, perhaps this blog will help me to achieve some sort of unknown super power that I inherently possess. Or maybe it will give someone else an idea that will lead to the breakthrough we've all been waiting for even if we didn't know it: COLD FUSION!
Alright, time to go to bed...but not before watching a quick episode of Star Trek TNG. All this thinking about future energy sources got me craving a bit of some good science fiction. I know, I'm a nerd. So-be-it. Goodnight world!
